Plans and billing

There are two plans and one difference between them: how many people can be in the workspace. Every feature works on both.

What each plan includes

Free covers up to five seats. Teams removes the limit. The first five members are free on Teams as well, so you pay $5 a month for each member beyond the fifth and nothing for the first five. Slack and Teams capture, Ask AI with your own model key, MCP access for agents, evidence links, review reminders, and the signed audit export are on both plans. Nothing is held back from a free workspace except the sixth seat.

Precedent never holds a model account of its own. Ask AI runs on the key your workspace connects under Settings, Integrations, billed by that provider to you. Upgrading to Teams does not buy model tokens. See Ask AI.

How seats are counted

A seat is a member of the workspace or an invitation nobody has accepted yet. Inviting five people to an empty workspace fills it, even before any of them sign in, because each of those invitations is a seat waiting to be taken. Removing a member or an invitation frees the seat immediately.

When a Free workspace is full, the invite button says so and the invitation is refused. Nothing else changes: everyone already in the workspace keeps working exactly as before. The same limit applies however somebody would join, including single sign-on: a full workspace does not provision a sixth person automatically, and their invitation stays pending until a seat is free.

Upgrading

  1. Settings, Billing. Admins only.
  2. Upgrade to Teams. Payment runs in an overlay from Paddle, who handle the card and the tax.
  3. The plan changes as soon as Paddle confirms the payment, usually within a few seconds.

Teams is billed per member above the free five. A workspace with eight members pays for three. When somebody joins or leaves, the billed quantity follows and Paddle prorates the difference on the next invoice. Pending invitations are not billed, only members.

A subscription always bills at least one seat, because Paddle has no zero-quantity subscription. If a Teams workspace shrinks back to five members or fewer it keeps paying for that one seat until somebody cancels. The Billing tab says so when it happens rather than charging quietly.

Managing and cancelling

Manage billing under Settings, Billing opens Paddle's customer portal, where the card, the invoices, and cancellation live. Paddle is the merchant of record: they are the seller on the invoice and they collect and remit sales tax and VAT.

Cancelling takes effect at the end of the period already paid for. The workspace then returns to Free with every member, every decision, and every piece of evidence intact. If it holds more than five seats at that point, nobody is removed. The only thing that stops is adding more people.

If a renewal payment fails, the workspace stays on Teams while Paddle retries the card. A failed payment is never a reason to lock somebody out of their own decision record.

Self-hosting

Billing is optional. A deployment with the PADDLE_* environment variables unset has no Billing tab, no checkout, and no member limit at all. Running your own copy of Precedent does not put a wall in front of your sixth colleague.
